David Moyes returns to London Stadium with Everton facing West Ham in key match

Moyes managed West Ham during two periods, first rescuing them from demotion in a brief role, then guiding them to European competition in his longer tenure and securing the 2023 UEFA Conference League trophy.

His current side Everton are aiming for a European spot, whereas Nuno Espirito Santo's West Ham sit in 17th position and are caught up in a tight fight against relegation.

Although Moyes has no need to demonstrate anything further, a feeling that West Ham supporters did not fully value him could still be at the forefront of his thoughts upon coming back to East London.

West Ham hold a two-point lead over 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who play the league's last team Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, meaning any result short of victory might drop them into the relegation zone with just four matches remaining.

Espirito Santo recognises the danger from Everton and notes that Moyes's in-depth knowledge of the West Ham players presents a hurdle before this essential encounter.

"(Past club) coaches gain an edge from understanding the squad, occasionally the daily practices," the Portuguese coach, appointed in September after Graham Potter's exit, explained to the media.

"Here, David is familiar with the practices and the players. Therefore we must introduce fresh elements to avoid being too easy to read."

Espirito Santo, who elevated Nottingham Forest to European football last year before his dismissal in September, added that managing against a previous team carries extra weight.

"It is invariably a notable match because of the regard and affection from old clubs, yet the drive to succeed remains. You aim to battle and triumph," he remarked.

West Ham failed to extend their advantage over Tottenham to four points after a goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday, but Espirito Santo stays assured of their survival, especially after being seven points below safety in January.

"The team's displays instil confidence and conviction throughout the organisation that we are holding our own effectively," he commented.

"The entire roster is ready, offering all possible choices to support our efforts, which is crucial for us."
