Crystal Palace overpower Fiorentina 3-0 in UEFA Conference League quarter-final opener
The two sides displayed early determination to claim an advantage in this high-stakes encounter, though neither shot-stopper was challenged at the outset, with Chris Richards denying Roberto Piccoli’s effort and Jean-Philippe Mateta directing a header off course.
Robin Gosens then missed a golden chance when Giovanni Fabbian played the ball into the area before locating the German player, who struggled to settle the ball for a shot on goal.
In comparison, Evann Guessand had scant time to react when Daniel Munoz whipped the ball to the striker inside the penalty area, and his snap shot rolled beyond the upright.
Guessand squandered another opportunity soon afterwards, but he earned a spot-kick after a foul by Dodo, who also received a booking that rules him out of the return fixture for La Viola.
Without a goal since January 25th, Mateta confidently took the penalty, deceiving David de Gea and scoring with 24 minutes played.
Mateta was thwarted by an excellent stop from De Gea only seven minutes later, but Tyrick Mitchell arrived to fire his rebound beyond Marin Pongracic and into the net via the post.
Just prior to the interval, Jaydee Canvot had an effort parried before Maxence Lacroix missed the mark with his shot.
The home team showed no signs of easing off as half-time neared, but they endured a fright soon after the resumption, as Fabbian struck the ball against Dean Henderson from a cut-back by Dodo.
Daichi Kamada hit the side netting in response, although the away side displayed encouraging moments, with Albert Gudmundsson and Piccoli forcing saves from Henderson in quick succession around the hour mark.
Guessand had to leave the pitch through injury in a setback for the home side, but they kept the score intact and countered effectively, as Ismaila Sarr and Mateta both nodded efforts wide.
However, Sarr connected perfectly with Kamada’s cross in the 91st minute, powering a header down into the ground and up into the top corner to strengthen Crystal Palace's lead considerably.
This late strike could prove decisive in the overall contest, capping off Crystal Palace's fifth straight game without defeat, their first full 90-minute victory in four outings, and leaving the Eagles firmly in control before the return at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
In contrast, it marks Fiorentina's first loss in seven games across all tournaments, setting them a tough challenge to overcome fresh UECL disappointment.
