CONMEBOL puts support behind FIFA President Infantino for fourth term
Although Infantino has not yet confirmed his intention to seek the 2027-2031 term, the CONMEBOL council announced in a statement that it unanimously backs the 56-year-olds leadership in preparation for a possible candidacy.
"President Gianni Infantino, thank you for your ongoing dedication to advancing South American football and for the global leadership you have provided," stated CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez.
"We greatly appreciate your strong ties to our area and your strategy for expanding the sport across the world."
CONMEBOL becomes the initial confederation to voice endorsement for Infantinos re-election.
The Swiss leader assumed the position in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter, and achieved unopposed re-elections in 2019 as well as 2023.
During his leadership, Infantino has championed the growth of FIFA tournaments, including this years North American World Cup as the inaugural edition with 48 teams, alongside the 2023 womens event which increased to 32 teams.
Infantinos period in charge has also attracted backlash concerning matters like governance and fixture overcrowding.
