Como's impressive surge halted by goalless stalemate against Udinese in Serie A

Como remain strong challengers for a debut appearance in the UEFA Champions League next term, and the initial 10 minutes clearly showed why Cesc Fabregas’s team leads the pack in terms of current performance.

Diego Carlos issued an early alert with a shot that narrowly missed the mark, soon followed by Maximo Perrone’s attempt which flew directly into Maduka Okoye’s grasp. In reply to the away team’s lively beginning, Arthur Atta unleashed a powerful 11th-minute strike that Jean Butez deftly turned aside.

Tension gripped the Bluenergy Stadium in the 20th minute when Atta tumbled inside the penalty area. Yet, despite fervent protests, referee Fabio Maresca remained unmoved and casually dismissed the calls for a spot kick.

A quieter spell ensued, but the action picked up with exchanges before the break, including Nico Paz forcing a save from Okoye with a long-range effort, and Butez dashing forward to deny Hassane Kamara’s attempt at the other end.

Much like the earlier exchanges, the second half opened without notable threats on goal, the sole moment of interest coming from Christian Kabasele’s 57th-minute shot, comfortably collected by Butez.

As neither team could find a way through, Kosta Runjaic and Fabregas looked to their benches for solutions. One such introduction almost proved decisive, as Como’s Sergi Roberto directed a header just above the bar.

It was not long before an Udinese replacement got a look at goal, with Idrissa Gueye’s forceful hit demanding a sharp save from Butez, marking the final noteworthy opportunity of the match.

This result widens Como’s lead to four points ahead of Juventus, their nearest pursuers in the battle for Champions League spots, though they have completed one more fixture. For Udinese, they sit two points below the upper echelons of the Serie A table, having suffered defeat in only one of their past five outings (W2, D2).
