Sevilla defender Azpilicueta has revealed he will retire in a heartfelt statement, marking the end of his extensive playing career.
The 36 year old shared the news with fans on Friday morning, confirming this season will be his final one.
"Dear football, Today, I wish to inform you that this season will mark the end of my professional football journey. Having spent countless years living my dream, I believe it is now time to embark on a new chapter in my life.
"Truthfully, despite preparing for this moment, penning this letter was not easy. After two decades, numerous individuals have significantly influenced my career.
"As a child in Pamplona, kicking a ball with friends, I could never have foreseen the incredible path that lay ahead. I am thankful for every experience: the victories, the painful defeats, the obstacles, and especially the people I have met and the friendships forged along the way."
He continued: "Football has bestowed upon me immense gifts: it has instilled in me principles such as teamwork, dedication, modesty, and esteem.
"It has allowed me to discover new nations, cultures, and languages. My heart is overflowing with gratitude and cherished moments that will accompany me in my future endeavours. With affection, César."
With over 500 appearances and nine major trophies during his 11 years at Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard cemented his status as a West London icon, leaving an indelible mark on the club and its supporters.
