Carrick encourages England manager Tuchel to include United trio in squad
Michael Carrick has encouraged England head coach Thomas Tuchel to offer Manchester United players Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Kobbie Mainoo an opportunity to demonstrate their suitability for the World Cup.
Tuchel has overlooked every United player since assuming control of England in January 2025, although Marcus Rashford received a call during his temporary moves to Aston Villa and Barcelona.
This striking fact highlights Uniteds downturn in the past few years, yet temporary manager Carrick has urged Tuchel to feature his key talents in the upcoming friendlies versus Japan and Uruguay in late March.
United defender Maguire has participated in three significant competitions and earned his most recent of 64 appearances 18 months back.
Mainoo recorded his latest of 10 caps for England in the identical match where Maguire last represented the Three Lions, a Nations League encounter against Ireland in September 2024.
Regarded as a prospective mainstay for England following his start in the Euro 2024 final versus Spain, the 20 year old midfielder lost his position at United amid Ruben Amorims tenure.
United full back Shaw, who also appeared in that Euro final defeat two years prior, remains a potential addition when Tuchel announces his lineup on Friday for the final home based friendlies prior to the World Cup.
Maguire, Mainoo, and Shaw have all begun Carricks nine fixtures since he stepped in for the dismissed Amorim, aiding a refreshed United to rise to third position before Fridays journey to Bournemouth.
For the players, I would be delighted to see them chosen for this camp and naturally for the summer tournament, Carrick remarked to journalists on Wednesday.
Carrick mentioned he had not contacted Tuchel regarding possible England selections ahead of the World Cup, scheduled to begin in North America on June 11.
I hold no sway over that, but certainly with their current form, they have positioned themselves strongly in contention and created opportunities for themselves, he added.
The players are undoubtedly performing at a level that merits inclusion, without question. It is simply not my call, so we must await the outcome.
Tuchel commented in August that the prolonged exclusion of United personnel does not indicate prejudice towards the team.
Mainoos lack of England involvement was reasonable considering he went four months without a Premier League start, yet he has reemerged as a vital component under Carrick.
Undoubtedly he can progress further in numerous areas, and given his youth primarily, Carrick noted.
There is ample potential ahead for growth, which is entirely expected. That is not a criticism of Kobbie in the slightest. It simply reflects his current career phase.
Lacking consistent matches for a stretch, then entering and delivering a sequence of games while regaining momentum, I believe he achieved that swiftly.
