Burkina Faso dismisses coach Traore following AFCON elimination

On Wednesday, Burkina Faso removed head coach Brama Traore and his entire technical team after the national side's defeat to fierce opponents Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Burkina Faso football federation president Oumarou Sawadogo explained that the move came due to performances far short of the standards anticipated for the team during the major competition.

Sawadogo expressed deep frustration and highlighted the aim of progressing to the last four stages at minimum.

The team, which also missed out on qualifying for the current World Cup, suffered a 3-0 loss against title holders Ivory Coast from the neighbouring country in Marrakesh just last Monday.

Amad Diallo, the Manchester United forward, netted the first goal and assisted Yan Diomande's strike before the interval. Replacement player Bazoumana Toure added the final touch to the scoreline.

In the group stage, Burkina Faso secured victories over Sudan and Equatorial Guinea yet fell to Algeria as well.

At 63 years old, Traore assumed the role in March 2024, succeeding the French manager Hubert Velud, who had been let go following a round of 16 departure in the prior edition of the tournament.
