Brazil beats England women 2-1 in Euros return match
Brazil defeated Englands women 2-1 in a home fixture on Saturday, overshadowing their celebration following the successful defence of the European Championship.
It marked the teams initial outing since overcoming Spain via penalties to secure Euro 2025 back in July, with Sarina Wiegmans squad suffering due to a sluggish opening.
Bia Zaneratto and Dudinha netted within the opening 18 minutes, providing the South American title holders with an ideal launch at Manchester Citys Etihad Stadium.
Even after their skipper Angelina received a red card at the 21 minute mark, the away side clung on to claim a noteworthy triumph.
Georgia Stanway converted a penalty in the latter period to pull one back for England, while Alex Greenwood and Stanway struck the goal frame during multiple opportunities to draw level.
"Once they saw the red card, we took charge of proceedings. The missing element was that crucial finish," Wiegman remarked.
The Lionesses anticipate a stronger showing as they entertain Australia at Derby on Tuesday.
