Bologna win shoot-out with Inter to reach Italian Super Cup final
Bologna advanced to the Italian Super Cup final on Friday by defeating Inter Milan 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in Riyadh.
Ciro Immobile netted the decisive penalty for Bologna before a small crowd in Saudi Arabia, arranging a final encounter with Serie A title holders Napoli on Monday.
Napoli secured their final berth with a 2-0 win over AC Milan on Thursday.
"I've had three and a half months of suffering but I've a big family who helped me," said Immobile, who has been absent for nearly the entire season owing to a thigh injury.
"Napoli are in great shape, but it's a one-off match and anything can happen."
Riccardo Orsolini equalised for Italian Cup winners Bologna with a penalty ten minutes before the interval, offsetting Marcus Thuram's early volley that opened the scoring for Inter.
Vincenzo Italiano's team coped better under pressure in the shoot-out, as Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella and Ange-Yoan Bonny all missed their attempts for Inter.
Usually comprising the Serie A and Italian Cup champions, the Italian Super Cup from 2023 has additionally featured the runners-up in both the league and the cup.
The four-team event is set to occur in Saudi Arabia until 2029 under contract.
