Benni McCarthy Praises Outstanding Kenya Effort Despite Loss to Estonia
During the match at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Kenya mounted a comeback after falling behind in the opening half to draw level at 1-1. Tanel Tammik leaped highest to nod in the initial goal for Estonia.
Nevertheless, Kenya delivered a remarkable performance in the latter period and reaped the benefits when rookie Zec Obiero threaded the ball through the defence to Ryan Ogam, who confronted the goalkeeper directly before delicately lifting it over into the goal.
The encounter was settled via penalty kicks, with Kenya's Richard Odada and replacement Mohammed Bajaber both failing to score theirs.
Austin Odhiambo, Lawrence Ouma, Erastus Erambo, and Ben Omondi netted for Harambee Stars, yet it proved insufficient as Estonia emerged victorious.
Kenya Dominated the Proceedings
"The first half left me somewhat unsatisfied with our rather flat performance, yet as the match progressed into the second half, we began to build real impetus," McCarthy remarked.
"During the break, I urged the players to exhibit the passion I know they possess, simply requiring greater patience in ball circulation and exploiting available areas.
"To collect the ball effectively, one must position oneself appropriately to receive it.
"I anticipated that gaps would appear for us post-interval as Estonia fatigued, and indeed, in that second half, we shone as the superior side by a wide margin.
"We circulated possession smoothly, ventured into their territory boldly, netted the leveller, and might have added two more goals.
"Lawrence Ouma and Ben Stanley ought to have found the target, plus that final chance where Estonia's defender blocked it on the line."
Spot Kicks Are Unpredictable
When questioned on the penalty shootout defeat, McCarthy replied: "Penalties are essentially a gamble. As I mentioned, our record with them is not the strongest.
"It happened similarly at CHAN and now versus Estonia. Still, suffering a loss on penalties after witnessing the dedication, poise, and control from the lads, especially against a side that has faced Italy, represents a commendable showing."
He continued: "Estonia have taken on Holland, Norway, and elite European opponents. As a modest East African nation, we demonstrated today that we are advancing positively, which is precisely what I seek from my squad.
"Progress is essential, and by 2027, we will be prepared, with the team fully geared up."
"In the second half, we asserted our African flair on home turf, and despite their first-half edge from longer cohesion than us, my players truly took control.
"Thus, I am thrilled with their display against Estonia, though we must now instil that from the opening whistle.
"I believe we can achieve this, enabling us to trouble numerous teams and secure victories by starting strongly and maintaining that second-half intensity."
The South African icon wrapped up by saying: "Losing on penalties, oh, it is regrettable for the players."
Kenya will meet Grenada in the playoff for third place, following the latter's 4-0 loss to Rwanda at the venue.
The 2026 version of this tournament will involve 48 national teams, accounting for nearly a quarter of FIFA's 211 Member Associations, divided into 12 groups of four.
Kenya is leveraging the Series in readiness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania co-hosting the 36th edition from 19 June to 18 July.
