Bayern on verge of Champions League quarters after smashing six past Atalanta
Bayern Munich secured a strong position in the Champions League quarter finals during Tuesday's match by dominating Atalanta with a 6 to 1 victory, showcasing precisely why these German powerhouses remain top contenders for the trophy.
The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute of the opening leg in Bergamo courtesy of Josip Stanisic, positioning them nearly guaranteed to advance thanks to an impressive double from star performer Michael Olise, plus additional goals by Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Jamal Musiala.
With only one home defeat this season, Bayern's aggressive performance, even starting Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala from the substitutes, left Atalanta facing slim prospects of turnaround.
A high profile matchup versus either Real Madrid or Manchester City lies ahead for Bayern in the subsequent stage, unless an extraordinary meltdown occurs during the return fixture in Munich next week.
Atalanta faces an insurmountable challenge following their exciting elimination of Borussia Dortmund to reach the round of 16, as their probable exit will conclude Italy's involvement in this year's Champions League.
Falling to continental elites carries no shame for a club historically modest yet consistently overachieving domestically and internationally over the past ten years.
Nevertheless, the evening proved humbling for Raffaele Palladino's squad, warmly cheered by their passionate crowd at both half time and full time, alongside a broader reflection on Italian football.
No mercy
Despite the absence of Kane and Musiala from the starting lineup, Bayern aggressively targeted Atalanta from the outset with constant pressure, as Olise challenged home keeper Marco Carnesecchi on two occasions within the opening five minutes.
A shot from Luis Diaz, which deflected for a corner, paved the way for Stanisic to capitalise on slack defence during the ensuing dead ball situation.
Atalanta appeared caught off guard when Olise passed the corner kick to Gnabry, who found space unmarked inside the box before laying off for Stanisic to finish from near point blank.
Olise put Atalanta in a deep hole during the 22nd minute by cutting inside from the right wing and elegantly bending in his second goal of the campaign in Europe's premier club tournament.
The French attacker played a pivotal role in Bayern's third goal just three minutes afterwards, with his exquisite control setting Gnabry free to race clear and seal the aggregate outcome early.
Gnabry nearly added another by striking the bar while Bayern overwhelmed their opponents, and manager Vincent Kompany displayed ruthlessness by introducing Musiala and Alphonso Davies for the second half.
Jackson fired in the fourth on 52 minutes, after which the contest turned increasingly awkward for Atalanta, their supporters reduced to applause as Olise unleashed a stunning strike for the highlight of the evening in the 64th minute.
Jackson then assisted Musiala to slot Bayern's sixth goal three minutes on, by which point Mario Pasalic's late reply for Atalanta in added time came after the Germans had chances for many more.
However, the modest group of Bayern supporters tucked in one corner of the Gewiss Stadium had no grievances, content with their side's progress towards a potential clash against City or Madrid.
