Barcelona, Lyon and Chelsea advance to Women's Champions League quarter-finals

On Wednesday, Barcelona and Lyon secured spots in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals. Chelsea meanwhile fought back to overcome Wolfsburg and progress directly to the last eight.

Defending champions Arsenal will join Manchester United in the play-offs after failing to claim a top-four spot, while Bayern Munich grabbed the final direct entry to the quarters.

Unbeaten Spanish title holders Barcelona topped the league stage with a 2-0 away victory over Paris FC. Vicky Lopez and Caroline Graham Hansen netted the goals in the French city.

Barcelona, three-time Champions League victors, have appeared in the final for five years running. The team nosed ahead of Lyon for first position on goal difference, with both sides concluding on 16 points.

This year's setup resembles the men's tournament, featuring direct qualification to the quarter-finals for the top four league phase teams, and a play-off stage for those from fifth to 12th.

Lyon crushed Atletico Madrid 4-0, including a penalty by skipper Wendie Renard plus strikes from Kadidiatou Diani and Korbin Shrader. An own goal by Vilde Boe Risa put Lyon in front, following which Atletico dropped to 10 players.

Chelsea triumphed 2-1 at Wolfsburg to secure third position. Alexandra Popp gave the home side the lead, but headed efforts from Lucy Bronze and Sam Kerr propelled the Blues into the quarter-finals.

Bayern Munich sailed to a 3-0 success against Norwegian side Valerenga, snatching fourth place from Arsenal and United by one point.

Arsenal claimed a 3-0 road win over Belgian team Leuven, courtesy of goals by Olivia Smith and Beth Mead, alongside an own goal from Saar Janssen.

Arsenal notched a fourth consecutive victory, yet it failed to prevent a play-off appearance after opening the league phase with two defeats in a row.

Manchester United edged Juventus 1-0 with a superb effort from Jess Park. The Italian side had occupied a top-four slot before kick-off. United finished tied with Arsenal at 12 points.

The knockout phase draw occurs on Thursday.
