Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern and Atletico advance to Champions League quarter-finals

Barcelona thrashed Newcastle United 7-2 on Wednesday to secure a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Liverpool came from behind to defeat Galatasaray in their last-16 clash, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid also moving forward to the next stage.

Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski each netted a brace as the La Liga frontrunners dismantled Newcastle at the Camp Nou, triumphing 7-2 in the return leg of their last-16 matchup to advance 8-3 overall.

In an exciting contest, Anthony Elanga found the net twice for Newcastle within the first 30 minutes, levelling the score after strikes from Raphinha and Marc Bernal.

Yet the Catalan outfit regained the lead when Lamine Yamal slotted home a penalty in added time before the break, making it 3-2 on the evening, and they dominated from there.

Fermin Lopez broke clear for 4-2 shortly after the restart, before Lewandowski fired in a rapid pair of goals around the 60-minute mark, and Raphinha rounded off the tally in the 72nd minute.

"The assurance we displayed in the second half was pleasing," commented Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

This represented a tough loss for Newcastle, marking only the third instance since 1955 that an English side has shipped eight or more goals across a European tie, one of the others occurring this week as Chelsea fell 8-2 overall to Paris Saint-Germain.

"With the match essentially decided, we struggled to respond, turning the second half into a real challenge," admitted Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

This was also merely the third occasion Barcelona have notched seven goals in a Champions League fixture, and Hansi Flick's team now anticipates a Spanish derby in the quarter-finals next month versus Atletico.

Diego Simeone's squad went down 3-2 in their London encounter with Tottenham Hotspur but advanced 7-5 on aggregate following their 5-2 success in the opening leg.

Randal Kolo Muani nodded in on the 30-minute mark to put Spurs ahead on the night, hinting at a potential dramatic turnaround in the series.

A brilliant effort from Julian Alvarez soon after the interval tempered the hosts' ambitions, despite a fine finish from Xavi Simons restoring Tottenham's lead on the scoresheet.

David Hancko headed home Atletico's second of the evening, prior to Simons converting a late penalty for his brace, allowing Spurs to salvage some dignity and snap an eight-game winless streak.

Half-centuries for Kane, Salah

Liverpool proved superior to Galatasaray, reversing a 1-0 deficit from the first leg with a convincing 4-0 victory at Anfield against the Turkish outfit.

Under Arne Slot, the Merseysiders took the lead on 25 minutes via a tidy first-time volley from Dominik Szoboszlai at a corner.

Mohamed Salah saw a weak spot-kick stopped in stoppage time of the first half, but the forward redeemed himself elegantly post-interval.

He set up two strikes within three minutes, assisting Hugo Ekitike and then Ryan Gravenberch.

Salah capped it off himself shortly past the hour, bending a exquisite shot into the top corner from outside the box off a Florian Wirtz pass.

This marked his 10th club goal of the campaign and his 50th in the Champions League, clinching a 4-1 aggregate win that sends the Reds into a quarter-final rematch with PSG.

This echoes a last-16 meeting from last year, which PSG won on spot-kicks, the French side having triumphed in four knockout duels against English teams since early 2025.

"We might have won 10-0, yet we performed solidly. We can take pride in that," remarked Ekitike.

Bayern's advancement over Atalanta was assured after their 6-1 first-leg win in Italy, and they sealed it with a 4-1 result in Munich.

Harry Kane converted a retaken penalty in the first half, his first attempt having been repelled, before adding a stunning second on 54 minutes.

The pair brought the Englishman to 50 Champions League goals, aligning him with Salah and Thierry Henry on that total, achieved in 66 outings versus 97 for Salah.

Youngster Lennart Karl added Bayern's third, with Luis Diaz netting the fourth, while Lazar Samardzic grabbed a consolation for the visitors as the Bavarians progressed 10-2 overall, setting up a blockbuster quarter-final against Real Madrid.

"We are not intimidated by anybody," Kane shared with DAZN regarding the upcoming clash.
