Barcelona lead La Liga after Yamal's spectacular strike, Atletico secure victory

Barcelona regained the lead in La Liga with a convincing 3-0 victory against Real Oviedo on Sunday, featuring goals from Dani Olmo, Raphinha, and a remarkable acrobatic finish by Lamine Yamal.

Following Real Madrid's win over Villarreal on Saturday that briefly placed them at the top, the Catalan side moved one point clear once more.

Earlier, Atletico Madrid comfortably won 3-0 against Mallorca, bolstering their third-place standing and trailing Barcelona by eight points.

Despite Real Oviedo languishing at the foot of the table with only two wins this season, Barcelona faced a tough challenge as the away team mounted a strong defensive effort to frustrate Hansi Flick's squad until the break.

In the end, the home team's superior talent shone through at the partially reopened Camp Nou, and once Olmo broke the deadlock, Barcelona dominated proceedings.

The standout moment was Yamal's goal, a stunning volley off Olmo's delivery that sealed the result for Barcelona.

"We face match after match, extensive travel, we returned late at night from Prague midweek, with hardly any rest days, and that is something to consider," Flick commented to the press, supporting his players after a sluggish opening period.

"During the first half, we found it tough, lacking our usual assurance, yet the second half showed marked improvement."

Flick highlighted Yamal's pressing efforts as even more vital than his brilliant finish.

"To me, the opener mattered far more, the way he pressed, regained possession, leading to our first goal, which unlocked the match and earned us the points," Flick clarified.

"It outweighed the third strike, though such moments thrill fans in football, and I am pleased he netted such a fine goal."

Barcelona laboured through a barren first half, their distribution uncharacteristically erratic.

Injured playmaker Pedri Gonzalez observed from the sidelines, appearing far from content.

They emerged revitalised after the interval and quickly seized control.

Following pressure from Yamal and Raphinha inside the penalty area, the ball fell to Olmo, who slotted it away.

Real Oviedo conceded a weak second after 57 minutes, as Raphinha capitalised on a misplaced back pass from David Costas and chipped it beyond goalkeeper Aaron Escandell.

Barcelona's final goal came courtesy of Yamal's flair, twisting into an overhead kick from Olmo's lofted pass as it dropped behind him, clinching the win.

A heavy rainstorm swept the stadium, prompting some supporters to seek shelter since the roof remains incomplete, while those who stayed witnessed Escandell thwart Robert Lewandowski's chance for a fourth with an excellent stop.

Atletico dominate

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid exploited Villarreal's defeat with a straightforward home success, extending their lead over the Yellow Submarine by three points.

Alexander Sorloth and Thiago Almada scored for Atletico, sandwiching an own goal by David Lopez at the Metropolitano.

The home side went ahead in the 22nd minute when Marcos Llorente unleashed a powerful shot, Roman parried effectively but the rebound reached Sorloth for an easy finish.

This marked the Norwegian striker's third goal across his previous three league outings and his seventh overall, matching Julian Alvarez as Atletico's leading scorer in the league.

Alvarez endured a ninth straight game without finding the net, but Simeone noted the Argentine's strong performance and future importance.

"We must remain patient and recognise Alvarez as a game changer," Simeone stated.

"To achieve significant goals this season, we require him fully fit, as he ranks among our top talents."

In the latter stages of the second half, Atletico extended their lead when a botched clearance off Llorente's cross ricocheted off Lopez into his own goal.

Almada completed the scoring late, latching onto a corner in the box and drilling it home after creating room.
