Barcelona extend LaLiga advantage to 11 points following straightforward win at Getafe

Robert Lewandowski created the initial opportunity of the match, yet his forceful header cleared the crossbar as Barcelona sought to breach Getafe’s tightly packed defensive line of five.

Dani Olmo subsequently missed a chance to set up the Polish forward during another Barca push, and although they dominated the play, Getafe’s robust style yielded results too, with Mauro Arambarri nearly scoring twice.

Joao Cancelo proved energetic along Barcelona’s right flank, and his delivery released Olmo shortly before the 30-minute point, but the forward’s cross was comfortably cleared.

Approaching the interval, Roony Bardghji unleashed a fierce shot that flew wide of the goal and posed no danger. Getafe countered shortly afterwards, creating a two-against-one break, though Davinchi botched his intended pass.

In added time at the end of the first half, Fermin Lopez again proved his value to the Blaugrana by slotting the ball past David Soria, giving the away side a crucial advantage going into the break.

Getafe emerged for the second period with greater intent, and in the first 10 minutes, they aggressively challenged to disrupt the table toppers.

Olmo posed the biggest threat to extending Barcelona’s lead, but Soria managed to grasp the forward’s curling right-footed effort, while Jules Kounde’s deft header drifted narrowly past the upright.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, if the home team hoped to mount a comeback, they required far more ball control than the 20.3% they had managed so far.

Olmo once more failed to hit the net from a promising position, prior to Marcus Rashford exploiting space at the Coliseum to make it 2-0 for the visitors, catching Getafe’s full team stranded forward.

This strike secured the outcome, positioning the Catalans 11 points ahead at the top with five fixtures remaining, potentially clinching the title with victories over Osasuna and Real Madrid in their upcoming matches.

Getafe face the possibility of slipping from European contention should other results turn against them this weekend.
