Bafana Bafana: What to expect from 2026 World Cup opponents Czech Republic

The European nation secured their spot in the tournament by defeating Denmark 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 stalemate in their last qualifying match earlier this week, marking their return to the international stage since 2006.

What kind of threat do they present?

The Czech squad typically deploys a 3-4-2-1 setup, though manager Miroslav Koubek occasionally opts for a 3-5-2 featuring a pair of traditional strikers. When the opposing team possesses the ball, they shift promptly to a 5-4-1 defensive shape.

Rather than focusing on maintaining control, patiently constructing attacks, and executing detailed passing combinations, the Czechs exhibited one of the quickest direct paces among all sides in the European qualification rounds. Their pressing actions follow a similar high-intensity pattern.

This approach allows them to transition the ball rapidly from defence to attack, frequently relying on long passes, contrasting sharply with Bafanas preferred possession-based style. As a result, the encounter promises a clear contrast in tactics.

The team boasts numerous athletes with robust physicality in challenges, headers, and recovery presses. They also deliver a substantial volume of crosses into the penalty area. During the qualifiers, the Czechs netted the highest number of goals from dead-ball situations among European outfits, tallying 11 such strikes, which represented half of their total scoring output.

This poses a significant concern for Bafana manager Hugo Broos, given that his squad struggles with aerial defence and often yields goals too readily from such deliveries.

On a more positive note, the Czechs fare poorly against teams that dominate the ball and feature individuals skilled in direct confrontations, potentially opening opportunities for talents like Oswin Appollis or Tshepang Moremi to exploit their defence.

Patrik Schick, the forward from Bayer Leverkusen, leads their attack, and supporters of the Premier League will recognise names such as Tomáš Souček from West Ham in midfield and defender Ladislav Krejčí of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, similar to Bafana, most of their roster hails from domestic leagues, including Slavia Prague, Viktoria Plzeň, and various other local sides.

At 74 years of age, the Czechs manager Koubek surpasses Broos in years, making this matchup something of a showdown between veteran leaders.

The Czechs hold the 43rd position in global rankings, ahead of South Africa at 60th according to FIFA.

The nations have clashed only once previously, during the Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia towards the end of 1997, ending in a 2-2 tie. Brendan Augustine and Helman Mkhalele found the net for Bafana, who rallied from deficits on two occasions to level the score.

Bafana will feature in the tournaments curtain-raiser versus Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on June 11, with their concluding group fixture set against South Korea in Monterrey on June 24.
