Aubameyang strikes twice as Marseille edge Lyon in Ligue 1
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted a brace as Marseille came from behind to claim a 3-2 home victory over Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday, reviving their bid for Champions League qualification.
Lyon opened the scoring early through Corentin Tolisso after catching Marseille off guard during a build-up from defence, yet Igor Paixao, introduced at the interval, restored parity with an exquisite long-range curler.
The young prospect Remi Himbert regained the lead for Lyon in the 76th minute with his initial Ligue 1 strike, though Aubameyang swiftly equalised by directing the ball past the keeper following Paixao's lofted delivery into the area.
Aubameyang ignited fervent cheers at the Velodrome right at the start of added time by sliding in to finish Ethan Nwaneri's delivery, halting Marseille's streak of four outings without success.
This triumph also represented Marseille's inaugural win since appointing coach Habib Beye last month in the wake of Roberto De Zerbi's exit.
"I'm very happy to win tonight, especially in an 'Olympico', in such a fiery stadium," Aubameyang told broadcaster Ligue 1+.
"Not everything was perfect, but we saw that we had what it takes to go for the win... and that we could wear them down in the end."
The outcome narrowed the gap to two points behind third-placed Lyon, who endured a second consecutive defeat after their setback against Strasbourg the prior weekend.
Lyon's manager Paulo Fonseca expressed outrage over the offside call that nullified Tolisso's effort, which would have pushed the score to 2-0 soon after the restart.
"I don't want to talk about anything," Fonseca told reporters. "What can I say... The better team lost today. We scored three goals today."
Fonseca had resumed touchline responsibilities only in December, after completing a nine-month ban from league matches stemming from an incident with an official in the prior term.
"I was suspended for nine months. I don't want to say anything," he added.
The top three teams in Ligue 1 earn direct entry to the Champions League group stage, whereas fourth place requires navigating two preliminary rounds.
Paris FC kicked off their era under fresh manager Antoine Kombouare with success earlier on Sunday, as Zimbabwe's Marshall Munetsi found the net to secure a 1-0 home win versus Nice.
Nathan Ngoy, fresh from his extra-time decider that advanced Lille to the Europa League round of 16 midweek, delivered another tardy strike to clinch a 1-0 victory for his team against Nantes at home.
Brest squeezed past league-bottom Metz by 1-0, whereas Lorient finished level at 2-2 with Auxerre.
