Atletico Set to Showcase Ambition Versus Arsenal as Alvarez Weighs Options
The Argentinian striker, rumoured to transfer to Arsenal or to Barcelona, the Spanish title holders, has appeared somewhat restless at points in the capital city.
For manager Diego Simeone and the club, it is essential to persuade Alvarez that his goals can be realised at Atletico through overcoming Mikel Arteta's leading Premier League outfit in London.
Alvarez initially sparked the speculation. "Maybe yes, maybe no, you never know," he remarked in March, when questioned about remaining at Atletico for the following season.
Subsequently, he dismissed the talk, preferring to concentrate on his squad's prospects for trophies this year and address his prospects afterwards, at least publicly.
"I try not to pay too much attention to (rumours) because something new comes out every week, new information, and I don't waste my energy on that," Alvarez stated prior to the 1-1 initial match draw with Arsenal last week.
"Instead, I try to focus on what we're doing. It's the most important time of the season, and I want to be in good shape so I can help the team and do great things here."
Simeone heaped compliments on the striker earlier this term, declaring him the squad's key figure, and supported him amid a spell of subpar performances.
Alvarez responded by recovering with 10 goals across his final 18 outings, including versus the Gunners.
Atletico demonstrated they harbour no sense of inadequacy as they travel to the Emirates Stadium, both teams still seeking that honour, potentially the largest clubs without it.
Simeone's team, led by Alvarez and the experienced French player Antoine Griezmann, who is spending his last moments at the club before joining MLS outfit Orlando City, dominated the fixture at their Metropolitano ground last week.
Arsenal departed lamenting a spot-kick decision that VAR overturned, yet their keeper David Raya faced more demands than Atleti's Jan Oblak.
Decision Time Approaches for Alvarez
At 26, Alvarez is reaching a stage in his profession where his aspirations might sway his choices more than previously.
A double Premier League champion and European victor with Manchester City, plus a World Cup triumph with Argentina, Alvarez has developed an appetite for victories.
Nevertheless, upon arriving at Atletico in 2024, his nearest brush with a title was the April Copa del Rey final loss on penalties to Real Sociedad.
Alvarez failed from the penalty mark in the shootout, heightening his frustration, and this is not his initial difficulty from 12 yards.
The prior season, Atletico's Champions League run concluded in the last 16 against opponents Real Madrid, with Alvarez's disputed 'double-touch' penalty ruled out.
But the striker was spot on versus Arsenal to equalise last week in Madrid with a fierce penalty that gave David Raya no opportunity, following Viktor Gyokeres netting first from the spot.
Alvarez was substituted due to what Spanish outlets described as a slight ankle injury, though he is anticipated to feature from the start in the return leg for Atletico.
Simeone altered his entire starting eleven for the recent LaLiga victory at Valencia, arriving in London with a revitalised and recovered squad, aiming to secure a Champions League final appearance for the first time in ten years.
The club yearns to claim the competition for the inaugural occasion, yet more than that, they can illustrate to Alvarez that he need not seek success elsewhere.
