Arteta Backs Returning Jesus as Potential Top Choice Forward for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta stated on Friday that Gabriel Jesus possesses the attributes to serve as Arsenal's primary striker, now that the Brazilian has made his comeback after spending 11 months out due to injury.

The 28 year old featured for the first time for the team since his knee problem in January, entering as a substitute during the Gunners' 3 to 0 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Jesus faces competition from Viktor Gyokeres and the injured Kai Havertz to become the central figure in Arsenal's forward line.

The Arsenal manager also boasts several alternatives in offensive roles, such as Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke, and Leandro Trossard.

During his press conference ahead of the home clash with struggling Wolves on Saturday, the Spanish coach was questioned on whether Jesus might challenge for the main striker spot.

"Yes, with his level of skill, considering what he has contributed before, and the enthusiasm he displayed the other day," he responded.

"He is definitely someone who needs to strive and target that position, without a doubt."

Arteta dismissed suggestions of offloading the ex Manchester City player, despite the abundance of attacking talents available, by firmly rejecting the notion.

"Gabriel brings plenty to the squad and he demonstrated that right from his initial moments back on the pitch," he noted. "He has invested immense effort to reach this stage once more, and our priority now is to keep him here."

The Arsenal head coach expressed confidence that goals would soon arrive for underperforming Gyokeres, who has netted only once in the Premier League since mid September.

Arteta explained that both the side and the 27 year old striker, acquired from Sporting Lisbon in July, must adjust to one another.

"We need to position the player optimally to unleash his abilities and realise his capabilities, while certain aspects of his responsibilities in our style of play must be met, forming a joint effort," he commented.

He continued: "It required time initially due to the new league, heightened expectations, lack of pre season preparation, but he is now gaining traction. The goals are on the way, and we will be delighted with his output."

Arsenal hold a two point lead over Manchester City atop the Premier League table before welcoming Wolves, a team on an eight match losing streak in the league.

Arteta remained cautious regarding the possible involvement of key players like centre back William Saliba and midfielder Declan Rice for the Emirates encounter.

He mentioned that evaluations would occur before kick off, with doubts also surrounding the availability of Jurrien Timber and Trossard.
