Arsenal secure tight victory versus Burnley advancing towards Premier League glory
With the opportunity to make major progress in pursuit of a historic achievement Arsenal displayed patience while constructing their first goal.
The side created their initial real opportunity when Leandro Trossard skillfully found room to fire a low effort against the near post from range. Eberechi Eze then produced his teams first effort on target via a hooked volley from distance.
Mikel Arteta showed frustration after Bukayo Saka was not awarded a spot kick following contact with Lucas Pires. Martin Odegaard fired from a gap inside the box only to see his attempt deflected narrowly wide.
The home side needed only to await the ensuing set piece to claim the first goal and it marked a landmark 18th strike of the campaign from such situations. Kai Havertz headed above a group of players in the six yard area to direct the ball into the net providing Saka with his 50th league assist in the process.
That allowed them to enter the break comfortably and upon returning they looked for further chances though Eze saw his effort loop onto the crossbar with a touch from Max Weiss.
Still behind their rivals from Manchester City in terms of goals scored Arsenal probed for an additional strike to improve their goal difference in case it proved decisive later.
Havertz the goalscorer appeared too eager in his tackle on Lesley Ugochukwu yet avoided dismissal thanks to referee Paul Tierney. Trossard then saw his shot drift past the top corner.
The hosts received ample added time for a second goal yet appeared satisfied with the important three points.
ArsenaIs third successive narrow win leaves them in a position where any error by Manchester City against Bournemouth on Tuesday could hand the title to North London prior to their own final fixture against Crystal Palace. Such an outcome would offer extra time to prepare for the upcoming Champions League final.
The outlook differs greatly for Burnley who will require a victory over Wolves in their next outing to prevent a new club record low for wins in a top flight campaign.
