Arsenal Claim $2 Million Reward After Victory in Inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup

Arsenal claimed the largest financial reward ever in women's club football by defeating Corinthians 3-2 following extra time to lift the first ever FIFA Women's Champions Cup on Sunday.

The European title holders overcame the Brazilian outsiders narrowly with a decisive goal from Caitlin Foord to earn a $2.3 million prize.

This amount is almost four times the 500,000 euros ($590,000) they got for clinching last season's Champions League.

The Gunners entered as strong contenders for the trophy which brought together the continental champions from six regions for the debut event.

Yet Corinthians stunned US title holders Gotham FC in Wednesday's semi finals and gave Arsenal a tough battle before more than 25,000 fans at the Emirates Stadium.

Olivia Smith's initial goal for Arsenal was soon matched by Gabi Zanotti.

England's Lotte Wubben-Moy put Arsenal back in front and the crowd started celebrating around the Emirates until Corinthians grabbed a late leveller in added time.

Vic Albuquerque converted from the penalty spot after Gisela Robledo was brought down in the box.

Arsenal's superior squad depth paid off during extra time as Foord slotted the ball past the keeper at the near post to ultimately crush Corinthians' resistance.
