Arne Slot dismissed as Liverpool manager a year after securing Premier League trophy

The Dutchman arrived at Anfield in 2024 after steering Feyenoord to successes in the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup.

Slot secured Liverpool's 20th top-flight English championship in his debut season at the club, but encountered difficulties in his sophomore year.

Liverpool stated: “The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC during his time with us has been substantial, meaningful and – most crucially for supporters and ourselves – successful.

At the same time, we have collectively decided that a change is required for the club to continue progressing.

“We would like to use this opportunity to express our gratitude to Arne, who will forever hold a special place in this football club's history as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.

He also helped steer the club through one of the most challenging periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he demonstrated throughout that time revealed a great deal about his character.

Nevertheless, our decision is based on the belief that the team’s direction is best served by a shift in approach.

“Arne departs with our thanks, with a Premier League title to his credit, and with the assurance that he and his family will always be welcome back at Anfield.”

Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who led the Cherries to a sixth-place finish, is believed to be the frontrunner to replace the Dutchman at Anfield.

After succeeding Jurgen Klopp, Slot guided Liverpool to only a second Premier League title, despite his sole acquisition being Federico Chiesa from Juventus for around £10 million.

However, the following summer saw the club spend a colossal £450 million on fresh talent, which included breaking the Premier League transfer record twice, recruiting Florian Wirtz for £116 million, and then Alexander Isak for £130 million.

But things have not gone according to plan, with their title defence failing to gain momentum. They ended up finishing fifth, which was just enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

He also had several disputes with club icon Mohamed Salah, who criticised Slot's playing style and advocated a return to 'heavy metal' football.

The Anfield crowd also grew weary of the football on show, booing the team on several occasions.
