Arne Slot Calls for Liverpool Enhancement After Three Straight Losses
Liverpool boss Arne Slot remarked that "outcomes speak volumes" following a trio of consecutive defeats, urging bolstering of the backline before Manchester United arrives at Anfield this Sunday.
The Premier League title holders triumphed in their initial seven fixtures across all tournaments this term, yet subpar displays were concealed by several tardy strikes.
Liverpool endured losses against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray in the Champions League, and Chelsea prior to the international hiatus, causing them to trail title challengers Arsenal by a single point.
Having clinched the championship convincingly last campaign, Liverpool invested close to £450 million ($604 million) in fresh acquisitions, setting club benchmarks with payments for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, both of whom are yet to net in the Premier League.
On the defensive side, Slot's squad has shipped two or more goals in four out of seven Premier League outings.
"We have contested 10 matches, securing seven victories and suffering three defeats. Those three setbacks came by narrow scores," Slot noted during his pre game media briefing on Friday.
"Yet as I continue to emphasise, relying on such tight margins is unwise.
"Outcomes tell the truth, if you drop three on the bounce then improvement is essential. We recognise this and must respond accordingly."
Mohamed Salah's outstanding displays drove Liverpool to glory last year, but the 33 year old Egyptian has found it tough to adapt to the squad alterations from the summer transfers.
Slot highlighted a shortage of decisive contributions from his glittering attack and issues during dead ball situations.
"We are not generating as many openings as before, and there is a cause for that, the tactics employed by rivals, and we must devise solutions," he explained.
"The initial solution lies in not leaking as many goals as recently. When opponents score once or twice, we require three in return.
"Early in last season, we often found those goals via a standout play from one of our leading trio. Later on, we relied on dead balls versus compact defences.
"This term, those standout plays are absent, and we have failed to convert from dead balls.
"Allowing four goals from dead balls is excessive for a side aiming to vie for honours."
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker is still sidelined by a hamstring problem, though Liverpool received positive updates on injuries with Ryan Gravenberch available for the United clash despite picking up a knock while playing for the Netherlands over the break.
