Alvaro Arbeloa officially leaves his post as Real Madrid coach
A former Real Madrid defender who had previously managed the club's youth and reserve teams, Arbeloa was appointed in January to succeed his fellow countryman Xabi Alonso. He led the 15-time European champions to a runners-up spot in La Liga.
Alonso departed following a loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, but Arbeloa likewise found it difficult to calm a divided dressing room as the team's performances deteriorated.
"Real Madrid C. F. and Alvaro Arbeloa have mutually agreed to terminate his period as head coach of the first team," the club announced in a statement.
"Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Alvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club, from his arrival at our youth academy, has consistently demonstrated loyalty, dedication, and professionalism. He embodies the values of our club."
In the lead-up to Sunday's vote, club president Florentino Perez made it clear that he plans to appoint Jose Mourinho as manager, as media speculation about the former coach's return to Real Madrid continues to grow.
Real's campaign unravelled on multiple fronts, encompassing a Champions League quarter-final elimination by Bayern Munich and a second-place finish in La Liga behind champions Barcelona.
