Alonso appreciates Real Madrid players backing him through difficult phase
Xabi Alonso, the Real Madrid manager, indicated that he senses strong support from his team to remain in charge following their 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Prior to the match, reports in Spanish outlets suggested Alonso might face dismissal if they lost to Pep Guardiola's team, and supporters at home booed the side after the final whistle.
Nevertheless, Madrid put in a solid showing overall, and Alonso expressed his appreciation to his squad, despite securing only two victories in their previous eight outings across various tournaments.
"I sense the backing from the players, we spend every day together at the training facility, readying for the fixtures," Alonso shared with journalists.
The manager noted that although Madrid suffered a second straight loss, he could not demand more from his charges.
"The players are exerting themselves to the utmost, so I have no complaints, I am truly thankful for their commitment on a daily basis, and we must press on," Alonso stated.
"The outcomes are not as desired, we need to examine our own efforts... but persist in our labours and hold faith that this phase will end, as all things do, and I am certain we can overcome it."
Following the match, Alonso's squad showed public solidarity with him, countering recent media claims of discontent towards the manager.
Rodrygo, who netted his initial goal in 33 appearances, approached to embrace Alonso after putting Madrid in front.
"We are navigating a challenging time, both for us and for him. Matters are not progressing smoothly... we aimed to demonstrate to everyone that we stand united with the manager," Rodrygo remarked to Movistar.
"We remain cohesive, this solidarity is essential to advance and reach our goals."
Defender Raul Asencio affirmed that the group supports Alonso completely.
Madrid lacked their leading scorer Kylian Mbappe due to knee issues that prevented his participation in Tuesday's session.
"It is premature to determine his availability for Sunday's La Liga clash against Alaves, but clearly he was unfit today," Alonso explained.
"Had he been able, he would have featured. In his absence, we certainly feel the gap."
