Hearts boss Derek McInnes states that Manchester United icon Alex Ferguson offers him key guidance amid the teams push for a landmark Scottish Premiership crown.

McInnes forged a bond with Ferguson, who stepped down as United manager in 2013, during his playing days at Rangers under the Scotsman’s longtime friend Walter Smith back in the 1990s.

They have kept in touch over the years, and the 84 year old plans to attend Hearts match against Aberdeen this Saturday, as the frontrunners aim to edge nearer their inaugural league triumph since 1960.

McInnes seeks to join the rare list as the initial manager outside Celtic or Rangers to claim the title since Ferguson guided Aberdeen to success in 1985.

"I chatted with him just today. Hes heading to our fixture on Saturday, so I am eager to meet up," McInnes commented on Wednesday.

"He is familiar with my squad, he recognises the players, and a few of them still struggle to believe it when I mention that to them."

Hearts hold a four point lead over Rangers in second and six points ahead of Celtic in third, though the latter has an extra match to play.

When questioned whether Ferguson supports Hearts in breaking the Old Firm dominance by securing the championship, McInnes replied: "I am fairly certain he does!"

McInnes appreciates the advantage of consulting Ferguson following his stellar coaching tenure, which featured 13 Premier League victories and two Champions League trophies at United.

"He provides useful tips and insights from his own experiences in tight title races and similar scenarios, so he has been incredibly supportive," McInnes noted.

"I feel honoured in every discussion with him and always gain valuable points because he has been through it all.

"He has managed championship successes and intense high stakes moments. Much of what he shares remains relevant and beneficial.

"It is great that he has connected with me and conversed often of late."
