Ajax Eyeing Girona Boss Míchel as Top Choice with Arne Slot Turning Down Offer
Ajax have gone through three head coaches this term following the dismissal of John Heitinga back in November and the departure of caretaker boss Fred Grim during March.
Multiple reports indicate that technical chief Jordi Cruyff, who took over in February, is targeting Girona's Míchel to take the helm at Ajax. The 50 year old from Spain guided Girona to their debut in the UEFA Champions League for 2024, though his deal expires at the end of the summer.
For the first time in Míchel's reign, the Catalan side are facing a drop to the lower division, sitting four points above the drop zone before Monday's clash between Sevilla and Real Sociedad. Marca reporter Matteo Moretto noted that talks are underway between Míchel and Ajax, yet the manager insists he will consider his next steps only after securing Girona's top flight status.
Arne Slot Declines Interest
De Telegraaf correspondent Mike Verweij revealed on Monday that Jordi Cruyff had made contact with Liverpool's Arne Slot too. The Dutch coach turned it down, reportedly explaining that heading back to the Eredivisie does not align with his ongoing ambitions.
Slot has faced scrutiny amid a tough campaign, but he appears poised to continue at Anfield as qualification for the UEFA Champions League seems assured, per Sky Sports.
Ajax are enduring one of their bleakest campaigns in a century. Sitting on 55 points after 32 matches and having failed to grab the final UEFA Champions League spot, they require just two additional points to surpass their poorest league position of the 21st century.
