African players in Europe: Marmoush torments Newcastle again

Omar Marmoush netted a brace to propel Manchester City to a 3-1 victory on the road against Newcastle United during the FA Cup clash over the weekend, marking the second instance this season where he has claimed a cup double against the Magpies.

The 27-year-old Egyptian previously grabbed two goals in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final win over Newcastle last month.

Mohamed Salah capped a rewarding weekend for Egyptian talents by scoring the second goal in Liverpool's 3-1 triumph away at Wolverhampton Wanderers in a separate fifth-round encounter.

AFP Sport spotlights prominent African contributors in the FA Cup and leading European leagues:

ENGLAND

OMAR MARMOUSH (Manchester City)

City fell behind due to Harvey Barnes' opener in the first half, but Savinho levelled the score just before the break. This paved the way for Marmoush, standing in for the injured Erling Haaland, to bundle home Matheus Nunes' cross in the 47th minute and then finish another Nunes pass in the 65th. The 27-year-old has now tallied six goals for City this season as they chase the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)

Egypt's skipper notched his ninth goal of the campaign in the Reds' success at Wolves. Salah has faced a tough season, yet he often scores against the league's bottom side. The 33-year-old featured in Liverpool's surprising 2-1 loss at Molineux on March 3 and struck again in the FA Cup match three days on, converting Andrew Robertson's cross in the 53rd minute.

SPAIN

AKOR ADAMS (Sevilla)

Nigeria's Adams maintained his impressive run in 2026 by netting the opener in Sevilla's 1-1 stalemate with Rayo Vallecano. He headed in from near point-blank range in the 13th minute. The forward, who also scored his debut club goal against these foes last September, has four strikes in his past eight outings.

GERMANY

SERHOU GUIRASSY (Borussia Dortmund)

Guirassy sustained his hot streak by prodding home from close quarters to open the scoring in a 2-1 Bundesliga success at Cologne. After 16 minutes, the Guinea forward capitalised on Maximilian Beier's header to nudge the ball in following a partially cleared corner. Following an extended barren run, Guirassy boasts six goals in his last six league fixtures and 12 overall this term.

YAN DIOMANDE (RB Leipzig)

Diomande netted for the third time in four games during Leipzig's vital 2-1 home victory versus Augsburg. With Leipzig behind, the young Ivorian outpaced Augsburg's Keven Schlotterbeck, shrugged off the onrushing defenders, and slotted the leveller with composure. The 19-year-old, who was in the fourth tier of US football only 18 months prior, has 10 goals and six assists in the league this season.

NICOLAS JACKSON (Bayern Munich)

With Harry Kane absent for Bayern Munich's first match without him this season, reserve forward Jackson rose to the occasion, netting once and assisting another in a 4-1 home rout of Borussia Moenchengladbach. Already leading 2-0 midway through the second half, Jackson surged into the box and drew a penalty when Gladbach's Rocco Reitz felled the Senegal star, earning a red card in the process. Jackson added his own strike, his first league goal since November, late on by latching onto Lennart Karl's pass and finishing from close range.
