Trio secure comeback wins to advance
13 - Sporting Braga returned to the UEL quarter finals four years after their previous outing. The Portuguese outfit wiped out their 2-0 first leg deficit against Ferencvaros within 15 minutes. They added two further goals to secure a 4-0 home victory and a 4-2 aggregate win. The 2011/12 finalists wasted no time, now just two rounds from a potential return. Braga have netted in their last 13 European home fixtures.
10 - Following a strong league phase showing, Fradi unravelled in Portugal. They exit the European stage with regret, aware it was a prime chance for their first quarter final in 50 years. The Hungarians must now focus on their league to defend the title and possibly qualify for next seasons UEL. They have shipped 10 goals against Portuguese sides, all away from home.
20 - Freiburg reversed their first leg defeat, netting five against Genk for a 5-1 home triumph. This propelled them to a 5-2 overall success, marking their deepest European progress ever. The Germans capitalised on wasteful foes, with three second half strikes sealing the deal. The win hit a club milestone, their 20th victory in UEFA club competitions.
8 - A huge opportunity slipped away for the Belgians, who generated ample chances over both legs to advance. That lingering sense of near miss will sting most. Though defensively sound for much of their UEL path, the Smurfs leaked nine goals across four knockout matches. It marked the eighth occasion they conceded five or more in a European game historically.
5 - Despite topping the league phase, Lyon tumbled at the knockout stages outset. Reduced to nine men in the second leg, L'OL lost 2-0 to Celta Vigo at Parc OL, trailing 3-1 on aggregate. Their woes against LaLiga teams persist, this setback proving costly. They remain without a win in five outings versus Spanish clubs (0-2-3).
21 - Celta enjoyed another strong campaign, reaching a European quarter final for the second consecutive appearance, nine years since their prior deep run. They proved tough to overcome, particularly with their prolific scoring. In their last match against French sides this season, they stayed unbeaten (3-1-0). Celta have tallied 21 goals overall, scoring in every fixture to date.
1 - FC Midtjyllands European hopes ended at the initial knockout barrier again, despite high aspirations. The Danes could not protect their 1-0 first leg lead over Nottingham Forest. They fell 2-1 at home, then missed all three penalties in the shootout, losing 3-0 on spots. In five knockout efforts, Herning have yet to succeed. After a fine season, Midtjylland endured their first home loss at the worst moment.
3 - Nottingham Forest celebrated at the MCH Arena on Thursday evening, replicating their effort from their last European adventure 30 years back. The Tricky Trees built on recent gains, recovering from a lacklustre league phase to reach the last eight. This marks their debut in the modern Europa League format, yet their third quarter final appearance counting the UEFA Cup era.
Bologna grind out extra time victory
6 - Aston Villa dispatched Lille with another shutout. The Villans struck twice after the break to win 2-0 at Villa Park and progress 3-0 on aggregate. Echoing their UEFA Conference League quarter final win over the Ligue 1 outfit two years prior, Unai Emerys team advanced by taking both legs. Villas home clean sheet was their sixth in Europe this term.
27 - Les Dogues stumbled against English opposition once more, the fifth instance of elimination in a two legged European tie versus a Premier League foe. Their dismal record against them adds to the frustration. Lille suffered their 13th loss in such encounters on Thursday, with goals conceded now totalling 27, exceeding any other nations teams.
22 - Real Betis reached a UEFA club competition quarter final for the second straight season. Los Verdiblancos took the tough route, rallying from a 1-0 defeat to beat Panathinaikos 4-0 and advance 4-1 overall. Last seasons UECL finalists dominated, entering the UEL last eight for the first time. Betis unleashed 22 shots on target in the 90 minutes.
19 - Clinging to a slim first leg lead only to collapse in the return leg haunted Panathinaikos too. Prassinoi faced relentless pressure from the start, managing just four attempts. Their UEL unbeaten streak ended at eight games. Conceding four in a UEL match is rare for the Athens club, last happening 19 years ago versus PSG.
12 - Porto joined the last eight as Dragao edge nearer to joining the three teams with multiple Europa League triumphs in the modern era. With a 2-1 first leg edge, Francesco Fariolis squad beat Stuttgart 2-0 at home to win 4-1 aggregate. They earn their first UEL quarter final in 12 years. That figure also matches their 12 home goals in five wins this term.
4 - Stuttgart stayed competitive throughout, yet could not breach a robust Porto defence. Like their 2012/13 Europa League exit at this stage, VfB bow out in the round of 16. Their struggles versus Portuguese clubs endure, shifting from unbeaten in three to a four match losing run against them.
9 - A captivating clash in Italy saw AS Roma erase a two goal deficit against Bologna, only to fall 4-3 after extra time at the Stadio Olimpico. The Giallorossi exited 5-4 over two legs, their second consecutive UEL last 16 departure. Success against Italian rivals in Europe eludes them, this the third tie loss. Despite three home goals, it was the first time in nine years they failed to win a European home game scoring three or more.
11 - Bologna achieved a remarkable upset, overcoming a team seldom beaten at home. Vincenzo Italianos side advances as one of two remaining Serie A clubs in Europe. They reach the UEL quarter finals, having done so twice in the UEFA Cup period. I Rossoblu have been tough to defeat this season, this win extending their unbeaten run to 11 after the opening day setback.
