About Copa Uruguay
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Copa Uruguay is a football competition created by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol that includes teams from all professional divisions in Uruguayan football. The Organización de Fútbol del Interior allows ten regional teams to join the competition, which takes the tally to 32 participants.
The first attempt to create this competition came in 1969, but it was only in 2022 that the AUF decided to launch the cup and decide on the format. The competition is played like in a World Cup, where only one leg is used to see a team through. Extra time and penalties determine the winner if the game is level after 90 minutes. The title match has always been held at Estadio Centenario.
The Copa Uruguay winners get a cash prize and earn the right to play the Supercopa Uruguaya against the league champions. The AUF determined that the winner also earns a spot in the Copa Libertadores, starting in the 2025 edition.
Defensor Sporting made history by winning the first edition of the Copa Uruguay and winning the title three years in a row. The purple and white squad defeated La Luz in 2022, Montevideo City Torque in 2023, and Nacional in 2024 to accomplish that milestone.
