About Women's Super League
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Swiss Women’s Super League, also referred to as AXA Women’s Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the top soccer category for women in Switzerland. The competition was created in 1970 under the name Nationalliga A, but this changed in 2020 during a restructuring of the women’s soccer ladder in the country. Ten teams participate in each Women’s Super League season.
The league works under a promotion-relegation format, divided into three stages. The first stage consists of a double round-robin between all ten teams, resulting in 18 matches for each club. The top eight teams after those matches enter the playoffs, where all teams are paired up in two-leg ties to eliminate each other until only two teams are left. The final is played at a neutral venue.
During the championship phase, the bottom-ranked teams enter a relegation playoff with the two top teams from the Nationalliga B. The winners of those two-leg series earn a spot in next season's Women’s Super League, while the losers of those ties are relegated to the Nationalliga B.
Many clubs have been capable of winning the Women’s Super League title. Out of those, Zurich Frauen are the most successful, even winning the title five times in a row.
