About Schweizer Cup

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Swiss Cup, or Schweizer Cup in German, is a cup competition from Switzerland that welcomes both professional and amateur teams. It was launched in 1925 and has earned quite a reputation among fans and experts. The competition is overseen by the Swiss Football Association.

The competition is played yearly by 64 teams from every category in the Swiss soccer system, with over 20 of those slots in the tournament being handed to regional or amateur teams. The tournament is played under a one-leg KO stage format, with the lower-tier teams hosting the games. Two restrictions are applied to the draw: teams from the top two categories cannot face each other during the first two rounds, and all matches are regionally drawn. After the third round, all restrictions are applied. Extra time and penalties are used to determine the winner in case the game is level after 90 minutes.

Many teams have had the honor of winning the trophy, the first of them being Grasshopper Club back in 1926. In fact, the team from Zurich has been involved in more than 30 title matches, a record for this competition.
