About Challenge League

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Swiss Challenge League, or Dieci Challenge League for sponsorship reasons, is the second most important soccer league in Switzerland. The competition was launched in 1898 as Swiss Serie B. After many changes to the number of teams involved in the tournament, the league settled with ten teams that aim to get promoted and to avoid relegation.

Given the number of teams, the competition sees all teams facing each other four times to complete 36 rounds of matches. The top team in the competition gets promoted to the Swiss Super League, while the team with the lowest number of points is relegated to the Swiss Promotion League. The runners-up also get a chance to get promoted, as they enter a two-leg playoff against the penultimate club from the Swiss Super League.

The Swiss soccer system has seen some of its most prolific teams being part of this competition from time to time. For example, the most winning team in Swiss Super League history, Grasshopper Club, spent two seasons in the Swiss Challenge League, something that also BSC Young Boys experienced in the late 90s.
