About Promotion League

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Promotion League, also named as Hoval Promotion League for sponsorship reasons, is the third soccer category in Switzerland’s professional league system. The competition saw the light in 2012 as part of a restructuring process by the Swiss Football Association. The tournament is seen as the connection between professional and amateur soccer in this country, even allowing top tier clubs to have reserve teams in this league.

The tournament works on a promotion-relegation system, with eighteen teams involved in each tournament. Each team plays its opponents twice every season, handing promotion to the club with the most points after 34 matches. Meanwhile, the two teams with the lowest number of points are relegated to 1. Liga Classic. The top seven teams are invited to play in the subsequent year’s Swiss Cup.

To allow competitiveness between all teams involved, the league only allowed four reserve teams for many seasons. Nonetheless, this rule was abolished in 2023, which prompted more reserve teams to join the category.
