About Superettan

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

Superettan is the second-tier professional football league in Sweden. While the competition as we know it today was founded in 2000, second-tier Swedish football traces its roots back to 1924 when it was initially organized into regional tournaments known as Division 2 and later Division 1. It currently sits behind the nation’s top-flight tournament Allsvenskan but ranks ahead of Ettan Fotbol, the third-tier.

Comprising 16 teams, Superettan employs a round-robin format where clubs face each other twice each season, both at home and away. The competition operates a promotion and relegation system; the top two finishers earn promotion to the prestigious Allsvenskan while the bottom two teams suffer demotion to Ettan Fotbol. Additionally, Superettan hosts a promotion/relegation playoff in which teams from the league fight to maintain their status or to advance to the first division.

Several clubs in Superettan have a storied history and passionate fan bases. Some of the biggest and most well-known teams that have graced this division include IFK Värnamo, Helsingborgs IF, Degerfors IF, and Östers IF, among others. These clubs have had their share of success and have contributed to the competitive spirit and appeal of Superettan, making it a vibrant and integral part of Swedish football.

Regarding broadcasting, Superettan is a league with room for growth. Kentaro acquired the TV rights in 2006, with TV4 Sport entering the frame in 2013. However, in 2017, Discovery-owned Eurosport obtained broadcasting rights for the Swedish Professional Football Leagues, which includes the second division, from 2020 to 2025.
