About Division 2

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

Division 2 is Sweden’s fourth-tier men’s football league, positioned below Ettan and above Division 3 in the Swedish football pyramid. Established in 1987 as the third-tier league, it continued in that role until Ettan was created in 2006.

The Division 2 season runs from April to October, featuring 84 teams divided into six groups of 14 clubs each. Teams face every other side in their group both home and away, totaling 26 rounds. The group winners are crowned champions and earn automatic promotion to Ettan, while the six runners-up enter a promotion playoff, split into two groups of three. The group winners advance to face the 13th-placed teams from Ettan’s Norra and Södra divisions in a two-legged matchup.

At the other end of the table, the bottom two teams from each group (12 in total) are relegated to Division 3, Sweden’s fifth-tier league. Additionally, the third-lowest clubs from each Division 2 group enter a relegation playoff alongside the runners-up from the 12 Division 3 groups.

In 2006, when Division 2 officially became Sweden’s fourth tier, the champions were IFK Timrå, Skiljebo SK, Gröndals IK, Skövde AIK, Torslanda IK, and IFK Malmö. Motala AIF, IK Oddevold, and Skellefteå FF were the first teams to win the Division 2 title multiple times.

IFK Timrå, Skiljebo SK, Gröndals IK, Skövde AIK, Torslanda IK, and IFK Malmö were the six respective Division 2 champions in 2006 when the league officially became Sweden’s fourth tier. Motala AIF, IK Oddevold, and Skellefteå FF became the first teams to be crowned Division 2 champions on more than one occasion.
