About Damallsvenskan

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Damallsvenskan is Sweden’s premier women’s football league, managed by the Swedish Football Association (SvFF). Founded in 1988, this competition made history by becoming the first semi-professional women’s football league in the world.

The Damallsvenskan operates on a spring-to-autumn schedule, running from March or April until November. It features 14 clubs—expanded from 12 in 2022—all facing each other twice in a double round-robin format.

The team with the most points is crowned champion, and the top three clubs qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Conversely, the bottom two teams are automatically relegated to the Elitettan, Sweden’s second-tier women’s league. The third-from-bottom club enters a two-legged relegation playoff against the third-placed team from the Elitettan.

The league has been home to renowned players like Brazilian icon Marta, Hope Solo, and Christen Press. Although the Damallsvenskan was established in 1988, national women’s championship football in Sweden dates back to 1973, when Öxabäck IF secured the title, a feat they repeated in 1988. Since then, FC Rosengård and Umeå IK have enjoyed significant success.
