About Segunda Federación

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Segunda Federación, initially known as Segunda RFEF, is the fourth division in the Spanish football system. This league operates under La Liga, the Segunda División, and the Primera Federación leagues. It was launched in 2020 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, and starting from the 2021-22 campaign, it became known as the Segunda Federación, dropping the initials of its governing body.

The Segunda Federación comprises five groups of eighteen teams each, which adds up to 90 teams each season. The tournament takes place between August and the end of May of the following year, with each group sorted out by the Spanish Federation, which considers the geographical location of all teams as the main criteria. The category allows both first-team and reserve clubs for La Liga and Segunda División teams, allowing reserve teams to be promoted only if their parent club is at least one division above them.

All teams in each group face each other twice per season, handing an automatic promotion to the top team in each group. Additionally, the top four teams in each region enter a promotion playoff, where they are paired up against teams from the other groups. Those who can win two ties are rewarded with a promotion to the Primera Federación category.

Teams from this league also get to battle for one of several spots to play in the following season’s Copa del Rey. The first seven teams in each region qualify for the cup tournament, disregarding whether they are reserve clubs.

Like in the other leagues under the Spanish Federation’s wing, the Segunda Federación league relegates several teams to the Tercera Federación category. Each year, 27 of the 90 teams that start the season are relegated to the lower tier, using a system where the five teams with the worst performances in each group get dropped to that category. Moreover, four of the five teams ranked 13th by the end of the season enter a relegation playoff, where the two teams that win the aggregate of the two-legged tie keep their spot in the Segunda Federación league.
