About Copa de la Reina
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Copa de la Reina, or Campeonato de España-Copa de Su Majestad La Reina, is an annual women’s football competition from Spain, which the Royal Spanish Football Federation organizes. The competition is usually played by clubs from the top Spanish football tiers, although teams from lower categories have also been included. Up to 48 teams play the Copa de La Reina recently each season, although that number has increased from its first edition, which took place in 1983.
The Copa de la Reina was considered Spain's top women’s football competition before the Spanish Primera División Femenina. Nonetheless, that changed in 1989 when the league was created.
All Copa de la Reina teams are drawn against each other to face in one-leg knockout matches from the first round until the quarter-finals. The only stage of the competition with a two-leg format is the semi-final, but once the identities of both challengers are known, a neutral venue is determined to host the final.
FC Barcelona is one of the most successful Copa de la Reina teams in history, along with Levante and Real Sociedad. Las Blaugranas are the proud owners of many records, and they held the highest margin for a title match, which came when they beat Real Sociedad 8-0 at La Romareda Stadium in Zaragoza in May 2024.
