Taça Revelação

The Taça Revelaçao is a competition created for Portuguese teams using players under 23 years of age. It was launched in 2018 by the Portuguese Football Federation, who has sanctioned the competition since its launch.

The competition is played every year by ten teams. To qualify, the teams must finish the Liga Revelaçao among the top eight or as one of the top two in the relegation phase. The first round of this competition is played by the seventh and eighth teams from the championship round and the top two seeds from the Relegation round. Those are one-leg ties that hand out a spot in the Quarter finals. Once there, the teams are included in the seeding chart to face a one-leg quarter final, with the highest ranked team hosting the game.

For the semi-finals, the format changes to two legs, giving the top seed in each tie home-field advantage for the return leg. Extra time and penalties are used in all phases to determine the winner if the tie or series is level.

Surprisingly, this competition has not been dominated by any of Portugal’s Big Three. Teams such as Estoril Praia, SC Braga, and CD Aves have won the title since its launch. In fact, CD Aves made history by winning the first-ever edition of the tournament in 2019.
