About Segunda División

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Paraguayan División Intermedia, commonly referred to as the Segunda División Paraguaya, is the second most important association football league in Paraguay. It is ranked under the Primera División since 1910, the year in which this tier was created.

The División Intermedia works under a promotion-relegation system, with sixteen teams fighting to be promoted to the Primera División while also trying to avoid being relegated to the Primera División B or Primera de Ascenso, depending on where the relegated team is located. Each calendar year, all teams face each other two times, with the three most successful earning a spot in the Primera División.

In terms of relegation, the División Intermedia uses an average system, which divides the number of points earned between the number of games played over the past three years. The three teams with the lowest average are relegated to the Primera División B Nacional (if they are not located in Asunción), or to the Primera División B Metropolitana (if they are in Asunción).

Coverage of this competition has been awarded to Tigo Star. The company has secured two consecutive deals with the Paraguayan Football Association, which allows the company to stream all games for this league weekly. Furthermore, a limited number of league matches are also available to watch on Tigo Sports and Paravisión every week under the deal that expires in 2025.
