About Primera Division

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Paraguayan First Division, also known as the División de Honor, is football’s top-tier category in that South American country. The first edition of this league took place back in 1906, but it has evolved into one of the most competitive in South America.

Contrary to what happens in Europe, the football season in Paraguay takes place with each calendar year. The Torneo Apertura takes place from January to May, while the Clausura tournament begins in July and concludes in December. Each tournament will see all teams playing 22 games, with the winner being the team with the most points after 22 matches.

This league works under a promotion-relegation system. Two teams will be relegated to the División Intermedia each year, which will see their champion and runner up promoted to the Paraguayan top-flight. The system, known as cociente, divides the number of points between the games played to get an average. The two teams with the lowest number of points after six tournaments will be relegated to the División Intermedia.

Added to the title, the Paraguayan tournament also uses a cumulative table, which hands out spots for international competitions such as the Copa Libertadores and for the Copa Sudamericana. The cumulative table is used to hand out the remaining spots in these competitions, since the champions have already secured their spots in the Libertadores.

The Primera División hosts Olimpia, one of the oldest clubs in South America, and who own two major records in this competition. The white and black side has never been relegated to a lower-tier category since this tournament was created, which leads us to the next record, as they are the most winning team in Paraguayan football history, having won over 40 league titles.

Coverage of this competition has been awarded to Tigo Star. The company has secured two consecutive deals with the Paraguayan Football Association, which allows them to carry several games each week until 2025.
