About Toppserien
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Toppserien is the top category for women’s soccer in Norway. Initial attempts to create a women’s league came in 1977 with regional leagues, but eventually materialized in 1984, when it emerged as 1. Divisjon. That name would stick until 1996, when the league became known as Eliteserien. The third rebranding for this league came in 2000 when it took the name Toppserien.
The league operates under a promotion-relegation system, with all teams facing each other three times throughout the season. The team with the most points after all games have been played wins the title and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League qualifying round, where they are going to be joined by the runners-up. The tournament’s third place earns a spot in the UEFA Women’s Europa League.
As for the relegation process, the team with the least points after 27 matches is relegated to the Norwegian First Division. An extra relegation spot is at stake between the ninth team in the Toppserien and a club from the Norwegian First Division in a home-and-away tie. The winner gets promoted or keeps his spot in the Norwegian top-flight.
Teams such as Rosenborg, LSK Kvinner, and Asker have become the ambassadors of this league in Europe. LSK Kvinner even managed to win the title six times in a row between 2014 and 2019, a record for this competition.
