📅About Eredivisie Women
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Vrouwen Eredivisie is the Netherlands' premier women's football league, governed by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). Founded in 2007, the league was suspended in 2012 due to the merger of the Dutch and Belgian women's first divisions, creating the BeNe League. However, it returned in 2015 following the BeNe League's collapse.
The Vrouwen Eredivisie features 12 teams competing in a double round-robin format, with each club facing every other team twice—once at home and once away. The season typically runs from September to May, culminating in the team with the most points being crowned champion.
The top two teams at the end of the season qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Additionally, the league announced the introduction of a relegation/promotion system from the 2025–2026 season onward, allowing movement between the Vrouwen Eredivisie and the Vrouwen Eerste Divisie, the Netherlands' second-tier women’s league.
The league has seen several structural changes over the years, initially starting as a quadruple round-robin competition, with teams facing each other four times per season. It transitioned to a triple round-robin format before returning to quadruple and finally settling on the current double round-robin format. The league also experimented with a postseason playoff to determine the champion, which was abandoned after the 2021-22 season.
AZ Vrouwen won the inaugural season and claimed the first three titles in succession. FC Twente then emerged as a dominant force, winning all but four of the next 14 seasons, while Ajax Vrouwen secured three championships during that period.
