About Liga MX Femenil

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Liga MX Femenil is the top-tier football category for women’s football in Mexico. The league was created in 2016 and eventually launched in 2017, with teams being sponsored by existing clubs in Liga MX. The competition has enjoyed quite a bit of success since its creation, raising the bar for women’s football in the country and establishing itself as a proper source of entertainment for fans in Mexico and abroad.

Contrary to other competitions, Liga MX Femenil does not operate under a promotion-relegation system, staying in synch with Liga MX’s decision not to promote or relegate teams. In fact, there is no lower-tier category in Mexican football under Liga MX Femenil. The tournament is played by eighteen teams, with eight playoff spots up for grabs. Two-leg ties are used to go all the way to the final.

Just like in Liga MX, the Liga MX Femenil works under a two-tournament format; the Apertura is played between July and December, and the Clausura competition takes place from January to May or early June. The winners of each tournament get to play in the Campeón de Campeones Femenil, which is held before the start of each Apertura tournament as a kickoff to each season.

Coverage for this league has been available on different platforms. In the United States, linear channels TUDN, Universo, and Fox Deportes have signed broadcasting agreements for different clubs. The same goes for streaming rights, with companies such as ViX, Fox Sports, and Peacock holding broadcasting rights for different teams. Meanwhile, coverage in Mexico has also been available on Televisa, TV Azteca, Fox Sports, and ESPN channels.
