About First Division

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The League of Ireland First Division is a men’s football league in the Republic of Ireland, established in 1985 as the country’s second division, succeeding the League of Ireland B Division. It operates under the Premier Division, the Republic of Ireland’s top-flight league, in the football pyramid.

The First Division season typically begins in February or March and concludes in October or November. The competition features 10 teams that compete in a quadruple round-robin format, facing each other four times—twice at home and twice away—across 36 rounds.

While there is no relegation, the team with the most points is crowned champion and earns automatic promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division. Clubs finishing in 2nd to 5th place enter a playoff for promotion.

In the playoffs, the runner-up faces the fifth-placed team in a two-legged match, while the third-placed side competes against the fourth-placed club. The winners move on to the next round and lock horns in a single leg to determine who advances to the final. In the final, they face the second-to-last team from the Premier Division, with the victor earning a spot in the Republic of Ireland’s top-flight league for the following season.

Drogheda United, Waterford, and UCD are notable teams in this division, with Drogheda United being the first team to win the First Division multiple times, achieving this milestone thanks to their 1990-91 success.
