About UEFA Nations League

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The UEFA Nations League, also referred to as simply the Nations League or UNL, is a biennial competition for Europe’s senior men’s national teams. The tournament kicked off for the first time in September 2018, with Cristiano Ronaldo captaining Portugal to lift the inaugural title, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final on the 9th of June, 2019.

A total of 55 UEFA national teams compete in this tournament, with the participants being divided into four divisions: League A, League B, League C, and League D. Sixteen nations make it to the first division, 16 to the second, another 16 to the third, while the remaining seven are placed in the last division. Each division consists of four groups except for League D, which boasts only two groups. Rankings determine the pots from which the groups are drawn from, with each group consisting of three to four nations. Teams play each other home and away in order to determine the group winners.

The UEFA Nations League employs a promotion/relegation system. The four group winners and runners-up in League A move on to a two-legged quarterfinal round, with the winners of that stage then proceeding to the semifinals, which, alongside the final, are single-leg ties. The group winners in Leagues B, C, and D earn promotion while the bottom teams in Leagues A and B get relegated. League C has four groups while League D has only two – as a result, the two worst-ranked League C teams automatically get demoted.

The season is split into two phases: the league phase and the finals. The UEFA Nations League, which all but replaces international friendly matches in favor of competitive football during the FIFA International Match Calendar, offers teams another shot at qualifying for the European Championship as four of the 24 participants for the Euros are decided by a Nations League play-off.

Fox Sports signed a six-year deal with UEFA that grants them live broadcasting rights to several UEFA competitions, including the UEFA Nations League, from 2022 through 2028. The broadcasters air games from this competition in the USA across its several platforms, including FS1 and FS2.

In the UK, Channel 4 secured broadcasting rights for 2022 to 2028 for all matches involving the English national team. All other games not involving the Three Lions are televised on Viaplay Group’s plethora of platforms, including Viaplay Sport 1 and Viaplay Sport 2, as well as live-streaming service Viaplay UK.
