About FIFA Club World Cup

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The FIFA Club World Cup, previously known as the FIFA Club World Championship, is an international men’s club tournament organized by FIFA, world football’s organizing body. Founded in 2004, this tournament underwent a tremendous revamp for the 2025 edition onward, transitioning from an annual event to a quadrennial competition, introducing a new trophy and format, and increasing the number of participants from seven to 32.

The FIFA Club World Cup is held in the summer of odd-numbered years preceding the FIFA World Cup. Thirty-two clubs from the six international confederations compete in this tournament, with UEFA providing the most representatives at 12 teams, followed by CONMEBOL with six. CONCACAF, CAF, and AFC have four slots each, while Oceania and the host country each send one representative.

Except for the host nation’s team, all participants must qualify through one of two pathways: the champions pathway or the ranking pathway. The champions pathway requires teams to win their continent’s premier club competition—such as the UEFA Champions League or Copa Libertadores—in any of the four seasons leading up to the FIFA Club World Cup. Alternatively, clubs can qualify through the ranking pathway based on their performance in these tournaments.

The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four for a single-round robin format, where each team plays every other side in its group once. The top two clubs from each group progress to the knockout stage, which features a direct single-match format from the round of 16 to the final. The tournament does not include a third-place playoff.

Brazilian clubs were dominant in the early years of the FIFA Club World Cup. Corinthians won the all-Brazilian inaugural final in 2000, while São Paulo and Internacional secured titles in 2005 and 2006, respectively—the tournament was not held from 2001 to 2004. AC Milan became the first European team to be crowned world champion, defeating Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors in the 2007 final. Real Madrid later became the first side to lift consecutive titles, claiming three in a row from 2016 to 2018, coinciding with their historic UEFA Champions League three-peat.

The debut of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup was initially scheduled for 2021 in China but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was eventually rescheduled for 2025, with the United States awarded hosting rights. Consequently, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami gained automatic qualification after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024.
