About EAFF E-1 Football Championship (women)

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The EAFF W-Cup, formerly known as the EAFF E-1 Football Championship (Women), is a regional tournament for the women’s national teams of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF). Established in 2005 as the EAFF Women’s Football Championship, it has undergone several name changes: to the EAFF East Asian Cup in 2012, the EAFF East Asian Championship in 2015, and rebranding to its current name from 2025 onward.

Like the men’s tournament, the EAFF W-Cup occurs every two to three years, typically in the summer (July or August) or in December. Four teams compete in the finals, with one slot determined through a qualifying round. The other three vacancies are often filled by the region’s highest-ranked teams and the host nation, which receives automatic qualification.

In the tournament, all teams are placed in one group and face each other once in a single round-robin format. The country with the most points is crowned champion, while the second-placed team is named the runner-up.

South Korea won the inaugural title in 2005, but Japan and North Korea have since emerged as dominant forces, claiming the subsequent seven editions.
