About EAFF E-1 Football Championship
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The EAFF E-1 Football Championship is a regional men's football competition in East Asia for the national teams of East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) members. Founded in 2003, it was originally known as the East Asian Football Championship until 2010 and then as the EAFF East Asian Cup from 2013 to 2015. This tournament succeeded the now-defunct Dynasty Cup, which ran from 1990 to 1998.
Typically held in summer (July/August) or December, the championship occurs every two to three years. Four teams compete: Japan, South Korea, and China receive automatic byes to the finals, while the final slot is filled through qualifiers among the remaining EAFF members.
The four participants compete in a single round-robin format, facing each other once. The team with the most points is crowned champion, while the runner-up finishes in second place.
China, Japan, and South Korea have historically dominated the competition, with South Korea notably being the first nation to win multiple titles (2003 and 2008) and to clinch three consecutive championships from 2015 to 2019.
